One condition often leads to another.
Secondary service connection means a condition caused or aggravated by an already service connected condition. This map shows relationships veterans commonly research, so you know which patterns the medical literature has studied. It does not say any of these apply to you; that takes medical nexus evidence specific to your case.
Back and neck conditions
Some veterans research whether these followed:
- Radiculopathy (nerve pain down a limb)
nerve symptoms radiating from the spine are rated separately from the back itself
- Sleep disturbance from chronic pain
pain that interrupts sleep is its own documented problem
- Depression or anxiety from chronic pain
mental health secondary to pain is among the most researched relationships
Tinnitus and hearing loss
Some veterans research whether these followed:
- Sleep disturbance
constant ringing makes falling and staying asleep harder
- Anxiety or depression
persistent tinnitus is strongly associated with mood effects in the research
- Concentration and cognitive complaints
often documented inside a mental health or TBI evaluation
PTSD and other mental health conditions
Some veterans research whether these followed:
- Sleep apnea
researched both directions; weight gain from medication is one studied pathway
- GERD from stress or medication
some psychiatric medications list reflux among side effects
- Erectile dysfunction from medication
a documented side effect of several common antidepressants; often rated 0 percent but opens SMC-K
Foot and knee conditions
Some veterans research whether these followed:
Rhinitis and sinusitis
Some veterans research whether these followed:
- Sleep apnea
chronic nasal obstruction is a researched contributor to obstructive sleep apnea
Medication side effects (from any service connected condition)
Some veterans research whether these followed:
- GERD from NSAIDs or other medication
long term anti inflammatory use is a researched cause of reflux and ulcers
- Erectile dysfunction
a listed side effect of many blood pressure and psychiatric medications
- Chronic fatigue or daytime sleepiness
sedating medications have documented daytime effects
- Dizziness or balance trouble
vestibular side effects belong in the record, whatever the diagnosis turns out to be
Diabetes (type 2)
Some veterans research whether these followed:
- Kidney disease
diabetic nephropathy is a recognized complication; see the kidney pages in the condition library
- Eye conditions (retinopathy)
documented through eye exams; see the vision pages in the condition library
What it takes to connect them
A secondary claim still needs medical evidence: a diagnosis of the second condition and a medical opinion explaining how the service connected condition caused or aggravated it. The legal basis for every relationship on this page is the same rule, 38 CFR 3.310. The relationships above are researched patterns, not automatic grants, and VA decides each one on the specific evidence in the file. Two guides cover the mechanics:
