Questions veterans ask about monthly compensation
How much is VA disability compensation per month?
It depends on your combined rating and your dependents. VA publishes a rate table each December that includes the annual cost-of-living increase. This calculator uses the current approved table, so the amount shown reflects the latest rates for your rating and family situation.
When do dependents increase my VA payment?
Dependents are added to your monthly rate only at a combined rating of 30 percent or higher. At 10 and 20 percent the rate is the same for everyone, regardless of family size.
Who counts as a dependent for VA compensation?
A spouse, children under 18, children aged 18 to 23 still in school, and dependent parents can each increase your rate at 30 percent and above. An extra amount applies for a spouse who needs regular aid and attendance.
Is VA disability compensation taxed?
No. VA disability compensation is not subject to federal income tax, and it is generally not taxed by states either. You do not report it as income on your tax return.
How often do VA disability rates change?
Once a year. New rates take effect December 1 with the same cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that Social Security uses, and VA announces the new figures each fall.
