How to cite us
Journalists, researchers, advocates, and educators are welcome to cite our work. The preferred format:
The Veteran Benefit Desk, "[Article or report title]," veteranbenefitdesk.com, [page URL], accessed [date].
A link to the original page is the only attribution we require for quotation within the limits described below. For broadcast or print where a link is not possible, name "The Veteran Benefit Desk" and the article or report title.
Citing our research and FOIA reports
Our research reports are built on public records, including FOIA responses, and each report publishes its methodology and source documents alongside the findings. When citing a finding, cite the report page itself rather than a screenshot of a chart, so your readers can reach the methodology, the limitations, and any corrections we have logged.
Licensing our datasets
The datasets we compile, including rate tables and FOIA-derived data, may be used for personal analysis and academic research with attribution. Commercial redistribution of a dataset, wholesale inclusion of it in another product or service, or publication of a substantial portion of it requires a written license first. Email legal@veteranbenefitdesk.com with what you want to use and how.
Republishing our articles and guides
Short quotations are welcome: up to 75 words from any article, with attribution to The Veteran Benefit Desk and a link to the original page. Beyond that, republication requires written permission first. That includes full-text reposting, translations, close paraphrases that follow our structure, and use of our tables, charts, or graphics. Where we grant syndication permission, the republished page must credit the original and carry a canonical link to it. Use of our content to train or fine-tune artificial intelligence models is prohibited without a written license, as our Terms of Use state. To request permission, email legal@veteranbenefitdesk.com with the URL you want to republish and where it will appear. We do not own the underlying government materials we cite, such as statutes, regulations, and VA publications; our rights cover our original wording, organization, analysis, and graphics. To report misuse you have found, use our report misuse page.
