Corneal Transplant Residuals VA Disability Rating

Diagnostic code 6036
By the editorial deskUpdated Jun 13, 2026Sources verified Jun 13, 2026
Quick summary
Status post corneal transplant is rated under diagnostic code 6036 on visual impairment, with a minimum rating of 10 percent. The vision tables control above the floor, and complications such as graft rejection episodes count under the eye formula's incapacitating episodes.
Key requirements
  • Service connection requires a current diagnosis, an in-service event or exposure, and a medical link (nexus) between the two.
  • VA assigns ratings of 10% to 30% under diagnostic code 6036, using the criteria in the rating table below.
  • The percentage assigned turns on Visual impairment or episodes.
  • Measured at the C&P exam: Visual acuity and field.

Minimum rating after a corneal transplant

Illustrates 10%

Situation. A corneal transplant was performed and the eye is healing.

How the criteria apply. A corneal transplant carries a minimum 10 percent rating under DC 6036.

Rated higher on vision

Illustrates 30%+

Situation. Corrected vision is reduced after the transplant.

How the criteria apply. Higher ratings follow the visual-impairment tables based on corrected acuity in each eye (DC 6036).

How this is usually measured. Vision ratings rest on measured results: corrected visual acuity read from a standard chart, and where the field of vision is at issue, a visual field test on a Goldmann perimeter or an equivalent automated device. Under 38 CFR 4.76 and 4.77, VA records these in a set way. A rating built on a rough description of vision, rather than measured acuity and a charted visual field, is worth a second look. Read 38 CFR 4.76

The transplant earns a 10 percent floor for life. Whatever vision the graft could not restore is rated on top through the standard acuity tables.

What VA looks at

The operative record, corrected acuity after the graft, rejection episodes, and the underlying condition that required transplant.

Common exam and DBQ topics

Vision with correction, rejection episodes, drop regimen, the reason for transplant.

Evidence that usually matters

Operative reports, post graft acuity measurements, rejection treatment records, the keratoconus or injury history.

Common misunderstandings

If the underlying condition (keratoconus, a service injury) is service connected, the transplant residuals inherit that connection. Rejection flares needing clinic treatment fit the incapacitating episode counting.

If a VA decision on this came back wrong

You have three review lanes, pick the one that fits the situation.

Under the Appeals Modernization Act (38 CFR 3.2500), a Higher Level Review or a Board Appeal must be requested within one year of the decision notice. A Supplemental Claim can generally be filed at any time after the decision, but filing any of the three within that one year window is what keeps the claim continuously pursued and protects the original effective date; wait longer and a later award may start from the new filing date instead.

State benefits stack with VA disability

Your rating may also qualify you for state-level benefits.

VA compensation is federal, but every state layers its own benefits on top. Many states reduce or waive property tax for disabled veterans, and many offer license, tuition, or vehicle benefits at various rating levels. The thresholds, dollar amounts, and eligibility rules vary widely from state to state, so the reliable answer is always your own state's guide.
