Wyoming Department of Veterans AffairsProperty tax exemption
$3,000 reduction in assessed value (approximately $25,200 of fair market value) on the primary residence.
State income tax
Wyoming has no state personal income tax, so military retirement pay, VA disability compensation, and survivor benefits are not taxed at the state level.
Disabled veteran plates
Wyoming offers special license plates for disabled veterans, former POWs, and Pearl Harbor survivors, with the registration tax waived for eligible disabled veterans; the state's $3,000 veteran property-tax exemption may instead be applied to a vehicle's licensing fee. Apply at the County Treasurer's office.
Public employment preference
Under Wyo. Stat. 19-14-102, veterans and eligible surviving spouses receive a hiring preference for public jobs - a 5 percent scoring advantage, or 10 percent for veterans with a service-connected disability of 10 percent or more - plus a guaranteed interview preference.
In state tuition
Under 38 USC 3679(c) (originally Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act), every public college that accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill or Montgomery GI Bill students must charge in state tuition to covered students using their GI Bill, regardless of state residency. The old requirement to enroll within 3 years of separation was removed by the Isakson and Roe Act effective August 1, 2021, so there is no longer a time limit after discharge. State specific extensions to this rule are noted below where applicable.
Dependent / survivor education
Wyoming pays tuition at the University of Wyoming and Wyoming community colleges for up to 8 semesters within 8 years for qualifying overseas combat veterans (Wyoming resident at least one year before entry, honorable discharge, authorized campaign or expeditionary medal) and for surviving spouses and dependents of service members who died on active duty (dependent children generally must be under 22).
Hunting and fishing license
Free or reduced fee combination license.
State park entrance
Reduced fees at Wyoming state parks for qualifying veterans.
State parks lifetime permit
Resident veterans rated 50 percent or higher qualify for a lifetime Wyoming State Parks permit giving free entry, day use, and camping (covering all occupants of the vehicle); 100 percent-disabled residents also receive free lifetime hunting and fishing licenses.
State veterans cemetery
The Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville provides the burial plot, grave opening and closing, and perpetual care at no cost for eligible veterans, their spouses, and dependents.
Wyoming ranks 47 of 51 for rural veterans' access to accredited help: 8.30 accredited representatives per 10,000 veterans, with 38.6 percent of its veterans living rural.
