Property tax exemption

Property tax
Threshold: 100 percent permanent and total service connected, or rated total due to individual unemployability (Wisconsin resident)

Refundable income tax credit equal to 100 percent of property taxes paid on the primary residence. Transfers to the unremarried surviving spouse.

State income tax

Income tax
Threshold: All residents

Wisconsin fully exempts U.S. military retirement pay, including Survivor Benefit Plan payments, from state income tax, and does not tax VA disability compensation.

Disabled veteran plates

Vehicle
Threshold: Disabled veterans (also waives park admission)

Wisconsin issues special Disabled Veteran license plates; a Wisconsin Disabled Veteran plate (or a DMV disabled-parking permit) also waives the vehicle admission fee at Wisconsin state parks. The state separately offers automobile grants to veterans who lost sight or the use of limbs.

Public employment preference

Employment
Threshold: 30%+ service-connected (non-competitive appointment)

Veterans with a 30 percent or greater service-connected disability may be appointed non-competitively to qualifying Wisconsin state positions, and the state runs veteran retraining grants (up to $3,000 per year) for unemployed or underemployed veterans.

In state tuition

Tuition
Threshold: Wisconsin-resident veteran

Under 38 USC 3679(c) (originally Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act), every public college that accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill or Montgomery GI Bill students must charge in state tuition to covered students using their GI Bill, regardless of state residency. The old requirement to enroll within 3 years of separation was removed by the Isakson and Roe Act effective August 1, 2021, so there is no longer a time limit after discharge. State specific extensions to this rule are noted below where applicable. Wisconsin GI Bill covers full tuition and fees at all University of Wisconsin System and Wisconsin Technical College System schools for qualifying veterans.

Wisconsin GI Bill (dependents)

Family education
Threshold: Spouse / child of a 30%+ or deceased veteran

The state-funded Wisconsin GI Bill remits full tuition and segregated fees (up to 8 semesters or 128 credits) at UW System and technical colleges for the spouses and children (17-25) of veterans rated 30 percent or higher service-connected, or who died in service.

Hunting and fishing license

Hunting & fishing
Threshold: 70%+ or individual unemployability ($3 fishing license); other privileges vary

Wisconsin sells a $3 annual Veteran/Disabled fishing license to resident veterans receiving VA disability compensation for a 70 percent or higher service-connected rating or individual unemployability. The DNR veterans page lists additional privileges at other thresholds (some at 50 percent), and qualifying returning veterans get one-time free small game, archery, gun deer, or annual fishing licenses. Wisconsin does not give veterans a free Conservation Patron License.

State park entrance

State parks
Threshold: Service connected disability (Wisconsin resident)

Reduced fees at Wisconsin state parks; free entry for veterans rated 100 percent.

State park admission

Recreation
Threshold: Disabled veterans (vehicle admission waived)

Disabled veterans showing a Wisconsin Disabled Veteran license plate or a DMV disabled-veteran parking permit enter Wisconsin state parks free of the vehicle admission fee.

State veterans cemeteries

Burial
Threshold: Eligible veterans, spouses, dependents

Wisconsin operates state veterans cemeteries (Union Grove, King, and Spooner) providing no-cost interment for eligible veterans, unremarried surviving spouses, and dependent children.
