Washington Department of Veterans Affairs

Property tax exemption

Property tax
Threshold: 80 percent or higher service connected (Washington resident, income-dependent)

Tiered property tax exemption (or deferral) on the primary residence based on combined disposable income; veterans rated 80 percent or higher qualify regardless of age.

State income tax

Income tax
Threshold: All residents

Washington has no personal income tax, so military retirement pay, VA disability compensation, and survivor benefits are not taxed at the state level.

Disabled veteran plates & exemption

Vehicle
Threshold: 100 percent service-connected (one vehicle)

Washington issues a no-fee Disabled Veteran license plate to veterans receiving 100 percent VA disability compensation, and exempts one personal-use vehicle from licensing fees and the excise / Regional Transit Authority tax for veterans with a 100 percent permanent service-connected disability.

Public employment preference

Employment
Threshold: Wartime veterans (5 pts); service-connected (10 pts)

Washington adds 10 points to the initial-appointment exam score of a veteran with a service-connected disability and 5 points for wartime veterans; the state constitution also gives honorably discharged veterans and their surviving spouses a preference in public employment.

In state tuition

Tuition
Threshold: Washington-resident veteran

Under 38 USC 3679(c) (originally Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act), every public college that accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill or Montgomery GI Bill students must charge in state tuition to covered students using their GI Bill, regardless of state residency. The old requirement to enroll within 3 years of separation was removed by the Isakson and Roe Act effective August 1, 2021, so there is no longer a time limit after discharge. State specific extensions to this rule are noted below where applicable. Washington extends in state tuition to active duty military and to honorably discharged veterans regardless of prior domicile.

Dependent / survivor education

Family education
Threshold: Dependents of 100% / KIA / POW-MIA veterans

Washington waives undergraduate tuition and fees (up to 200 quarter credits) at public colleges for the children (17-26) and unremarried spouses of veterans rated 100 percent service-connected, killed in action, or listed as POW/MIA.

Hunting and fishing license

Hunting & fishing
Threshold: 30 percent or higher service connected (Washington resident)

Reduced fee hunting and fishing licenses.

State park entrance

State parks
Threshold: 30 percent or higher service connected (Washington resident)

Free annual Washington State Parks Disabled Veteran Lifetime Pass.

State parks lifetime pass

Recreation
Threshold: 30%+ service-connected resident

Washington State Parks issues a free Lifetime Disabled Veteran Pass to resident veterans with a combined service-connected disability rating of 30 percent or more. It covers free day-use parking, boat launch, trailer dump, and camping or moorage (reservation and change fees apply for bookings made after October 1, 2025).

State veterans cemetery

Burial
Threshold: WA residents meeting VA burial eligibility

The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs operates state veterans cemeteries (including Medical Lake) providing a no-cost gravesite, grave opening and closing, and perpetual care for eligible resident veterans, with spouses and dependents eligible alongside.
