Utah offers a property tax abatement based on disability percentage applied to up to $505,548 of taxable value (2026), free hunting and fishing licenses for resident veterans rated 50 percent or higher, in state tuition at Utah public colleges, and free state park admission for qualifying veterans.

Property tax exemption

Property tax
Threshold: 10 percent or higher service connected (Utah resident)

Property tax abatement equal to (rating percentage) x (lesser of $505,548 or actual taxable value). Adjusts annually.

State income tax

Income tax
Threshold: All residents (credit)

Utah does not tax VA disability compensation, and a state military-retirement income-tax credit effectively exempts military retirement pay from Utah income tax.

Disabled veteran plates & registration

Vehicle
Threshold: Any service-connected disability ($8.25 initial plate fee)

Utah offers the Disabled Veteran special plate to veterans with any service-connected disability. Per the Utah DMV fee schedule the initial plate fee is $8.25 (add $3.00 for a set), with no annual contribution for this plate class; standard registration fees still apply.

Public employment preference

Employment
Threshold: Veterans (5 pts); disabled (10 pts)

Utah adds 5 points to a veteran's employment test score and 10 points for disabled veterans, on state, county, municipal, and local-government jobs.

In state tuition

Tuition
Threshold: Utah-resident veteran

Under 38 USC 3679(c) (originally Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act), every public college that accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill or Montgomery GI Bill students must charge in state tuition to covered students using their GI Bill, regardless of state residency. The old requirement to enroll within 3 years of separation was removed by the Isakson and Roe Act effective August 1, 2021, so there is no longer a time limit after discharge. State specific extensions to this rule are noted below where applicable. Utah Purple Heart Tuition Waiver covers tuition at public Utah colleges for Purple Heart recipients (per the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs).

Dependent / survivor education

Family education
Threshold: Purple Heart (self); survivors of post-9/11 KIA (Scott Lundell)

Utah waives tuition for Purple Heart recipients at state colleges, and the Scott B. Lundell waiver covers tuition for the surviving spouses and dependents of service members killed in action on or after Sept. 11, 2001.

Hunting and fishing license

Hunting & fishing
Threshold: 50 percent or higher service connected (Utah resident)

Reduced fee Disabled Veteran Combination License.

State park entrance

State parks
Threshold: Service connected disability

Free annual Honor Pass to Utah state parks for qualifying veterans.

Camping & recreation

Recreation
Threshold: 50%+ service-connected resident (free Honor Pass + 7 guests)

Utah's Veterans with Disabilities Honor Pass gives free access to all Utah State Parks (for the veteran and up to seven guests in one vehicle) to resident veterans rated 50%+ service-connected.

State veterans cemetery

Burial
Threshold: Eligible veterans, spouses, dependents

The Utah State Veterans Cemetery & Memorial Park (Bluffdale) provides the plot, headstone, and burial services at no cost for the veteran (a small fee for dependents).
