Property tax exemption

Property tax
Threshold: 100 percent permanent and total service connected (Ohio resident)

Enhanced Homestead Exemption: $50,000 reduction in true value (vs. standard $25,000) on the primary residence. Transfers to the surviving spouse (age and other rules apply).

State income tax

Income tax
Threshold: All residents

Ohio does not tax VA disability compensation, and military retirement pay for service in the uniformed services, the reserves, or the Ohio National Guard is fully exempt from Ohio income tax. (Local school-district income taxes may still apply.)

Disabled veteran plates & registration

Vehicle
Threshold: 100% service-connected (up to two free plates)

Ohio issues up to two free Disabled Veteran or military license plates to veterans rated 100% service-connected, waiving the registration fees and taxes (personalized specialty plates are excluded).

Civil service preference

Employment
Threshold: Veterans (20% added to passing score); spouses/survivors (10 pts)

Ohio adds 20% to a veteran's passing score on state civil service exams (15% for current reserve members after initial training), and a 10-point derived preference for eligible spouses, surviving spouses, or mothers of veterans.

In state tuition

Tuition
Threshold: Ohio-resident veteran

Under 38 USC 3679(c) (originally Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act), every public college that accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill or Montgomery GI Bill students must charge in state tuition to covered students using their GI Bill, regardless of state residency. The old requirement to enroll within 3 years of separation was removed by the Isakson and Roe Act effective August 1, 2021, so there is no longer a time limit after discharge. State specific extensions to this rule are noted below where applicable. Ohio extends in state tuition to active duty military stationed in Ohio and to honorably discharged veterans.

Dependent education (War Orphans Scholarship)

Family education
Threshold: Ohio residents at least 16 and under 25; parent killed in combat or severely disabled from wartime service

The Ohio War Orphans & Severely Disabled Veterans' Children Scholarship pays a large share of tuition and general fees at Ohio public colleges (about 79% in recent years) and a fixed annual amount at eligible private schools (about $6,600) for Ohio residents at least 16 and under 25 who enroll full-time in undergraduate study and whose veteran parent was killed in combat or severely disabled from wartime service.

Hunting and fishing license

Hunting & fishing
Threshold: 100 percent service connected (Ohio resident)

Free hunting and fishing licenses for qualifying resident veterans.

State park entrance

State parks
Threshold: 100% P&T Ohio residents and former POWs (free camping); other veterans/military (discount)

Ohio state parks are free to enter for everyone. Ohio-resident veterans with a permanent and total service-connected disability and Ohio-resident former POWs camp free (apply through the reservation system with a VA benefit summary), and other veterans and active-duty members get a percentage discount on one campsite or lodging unit per visit, recently expanded by state law.

Camping & recreation

Recreation
Threshold: 100% permanently & totally disabled veterans and former POWs (free camping)

Ohio gives free campsite camping at state parks to former POWs and veterans rated 100% permanently and totally disabled, and a free five-year hunting and fishing license to eligible veterans.

Veterans cemetery & burial

Burial
Threshold: Honorably discharged veterans and eligible dependents

Eligible Ohio veterans may be buried at no cost to the family in the VA national cemeteries in Ohio (Ohio Western Reserve in Seville and Dayton National Cemetery) - gravesite, opening and closing, perpetual care, government headstone or marker, and burial flag provided. The Ohio Veterans Home Cemetery in Sandusky serves residents of the Ohio Veterans Homes.
