New Hampshire

New Hampshire offers a Standard Veterans Tax Credit (cities and towns choose the amount, statute floor $50), a separate $700 credit for veterans rated 100 percent permanent and total, free state park day-use admission for resident veterans with any service-connected disability, in state tuition for New Hampshire-resident veterans, and reduced state park fees.

New Hampshire Department of Veterans Affairs

Property tax exemption

Property tax
Threshold: Any qualifying veteran (standard credit); 100 percent permanent and total service connected (disabled credit)

Standard/Optional Veterans' Tax Credit (RSA 72:28): $50 standard, and towns may adopt an optional credit of $51 up to $750. Service-Connected Total Disability Credit (RSA 72:35): $700 standard, and towns may adopt an optional credit of $701 up to $4,000 for veterans rated 100 percent permanent and total. Amounts vary by municipality; surviving spouses can qualify under both statutes.

State income tax

Income tax
Threshold: All residents

New Hampshire has no tax on wages or retirement income (it repealed its interest-and-dividends tax in 2025), so your VA disability compensation and military retirement pay are not taxed by the state.

Disabled veteran plates & registration

Vehicle
Threshold: P&T (amputee/paraplegic/blind) with VA-adapted vehicle (free plate + registration)

New Hampshire issues one free set of special plates - and waives the driver-license and registration fees - for permanently and totally disabled veterans (amputee, paraplegic, or blind) who received a VA-adapted vehicle.

Public employment preference

Employment
Threshold: Veterans, disabled veterans, and military spouses (hiring preference)

New Hampshire grants a hiring preference in public employment to veterans, disabled veterans, and military spouses (expanded by HB 64), with long-standing preferences for honorably discharged wartime veterans, unremarried surviving spouses, and spouses of totally disabled wartime veterans in state and local government jobs, plus specific preferences at the Liquor Commission and NH Veterans Home. It is a hiring preference, not a 5/10-point exam bonus.

In state tuition

Tuition
Threshold: New Hampshire-resident veteran

Under 38 USC 3679(c) (originally Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act), every public college that accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill or Montgomery GI Bill students must charge in state tuition to covered students using their GI Bill, regardless of state residency. The old requirement to enroll within 3 years of separation was removed by the Isakson and Roe Act effective August 1, 2021, so there is no longer a time limit after discharge. State specific extensions to this rule are noted below where applicable.

Dependent / survivor education

Family education
Threshold: Child (under 27) of a 100% P&T veteran; children of war-deceased

The University System of New Hampshire waives tuition for the children (under 27) of veterans rated 100% P&T; children (16-25) of those who died in wartime or from service get free tuition plus up to $2,500 a year.

Hunting and fishing license

Hunting & fishing
Threshold: 100 percent service connected (New Hampshire resident)

Free hunting and fishing licenses for qualifying veterans.

State park entrance

State parks
Threshold: Service connected disability

Reduced or free entry to New Hampshire state parks for qualifying veterans.

Camping & recreation

Recreation
Threshold: Resident with any service-connected disability (free day-use)

Resident veterans with any service-connected disability rating get free day-use admission to New Hampshire state parks (shown by a DV plate or VA letter).

State veterans cemetery

Burial
Threshold: Honorably discharged veterans and dependents

The New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen provides the plot, interment, and perpetual care at no cost for honorably discharged veterans and their eligible dependents.
