Mississippi

Mississippi exempts 100 percent service connected disabled veterans from all ad valorem property taxes on the homestead, exempts residents rated 100 percent service connected from hunting and fishing licenses, in state tuition at public universities, and free admission to state parks for qualifying veterans.

Mississippi Department of Veterans Affairs

Property tax exemption

Property tax
Threshold: 100 percent permanent and total service connected (Mississippi resident)

Full exemption from all ad valorem property taxes on the primary residence.

State income tax

Income tax
Threshold: All residents

Mississippi does not tax VA disability compensation, and military retirement pay is fully exempt from Mississippi income tax.

Disabled veteran plates & registration

Vehicle
Threshold: 100% P&T / TDIU or 70% (about $1 plate)

Mississippi issues a Disabled American Veteran plate for about $1 a year to veterans rated 100% permanent and total (or TDIU, or 70% non-permanent), with exemption from ad valorem and privilege taxes; up to two plates.

Public employment preference

Employment
Threshold: Veterans (4 pts); 30%+ disabled or Purple Heart (8 pts, ranked ahead of veterans)

The Mississippi State Personnel Board adds 4 preference points to state job scores for eligible veterans and 8 points for disabled veterans (30 percent or higher service-connected rating or Purple Heart), and disabled veterans are placed ahead of other veterans when agencies rank eligible applicants. Claim the preference on the application.

In state tuition

Tuition
Threshold: Mississippi-resident veteran

Under 38 USC 3679(c) (originally Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act), every public college that accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill or Montgomery GI Bill students must charge in state tuition to covered students using their GI Bill, regardless of state residency. The old requirement to enroll within 3 years of separation was removed by the Isakson and Roe Act effective August 1, 2021, so there is no longer a time limit after discharge. State specific extensions to this rule are noted below where applicable.

Dependent / survivor education

Family education
Threshold: Children of POW / MIA service members

Mississippi gives the children of POW/MIA service members an eight-semester scholarship (tuition and fees) at state-supported colleges; nonresident veterans also pay in-state tuition.

Hunting and fishing license

Hunting & fishing
Threshold: 100 percent service connected (license exemption, Mississippi resident)

Mississippi residents who are 100 percent service-connected disabled are exempt from buying hunting and fishing licenses - carry proof of residency and disability in the field, or optionally purchase the annual Disabled Exempt License as carry-proof.

State park entrance

State parks
Threshold: Service connected disability (Mississippi resident)

Reduced or free admission to Mississippi State Parks for qualifying veterans.

Camping & recreation

Recreation
Threshold: 100% SC (license exemption); veterans (15% off state park camping and lodging)

Mississippi State Parks give veterans 15% off camping and lodging, and residents who are 100 percent service-connected disabled are exempt from hunting and fishing license requirements. Mississippi does not offer a free Lifetime Sportsman License for veterans.

State veterans cemetery

Burial
Threshold: Veterans, spouses, dependents

Mississippi's two state veterans memorial cemeteries (Newton and Kilmichael) list a total burial cost of about $950 per veteran, spouse, or dependent, plus $115 for a columbarium niche cover or $445 for in-ground burial of casketed or cremated remains, paid directly to the cemetery. For eligible veterans the VA's burial plot allowance is paid to the cemetery, so a veteran's burial is generally at no out-of-pocket cost; families of spouses and dependents pay the posted fees.
