Property tax credit

Property tax
Threshold: 100 percent disabled (including 100 percent service connected), or 65 and older, subject to income limits

Missouri Property Tax Credit Claim (the 'circuit breaker') provides a credit of up to $1,100 for property tax paid on a primary residence the claimant owns and occupies (up to $750 for renters), for claimants who are 100 percent disabled - including 100 percent disabled veterans - or qualifying seniors, subject to household income limits ($30,000 single / $34,000 married filing combined for homeowners). VA payments are excluded from the income calculation when the claimant is 100 percent disabled as a result of military service. This is a refund-style credit claim, not a property tax exemption.

State income tax

Income tax
Threshold: All residents

Missouri does not tax VA disability compensation, and military retirement pay is fully exempt from Missouri income tax (100% deduction).

Disabled veteran plates & registration

Vehicle
Threshold: Service-connected disability (one free DV plate)

Missouri issues one free set of Disabled Veteran plates to honorably discharged residents with a VA-certified service-connected disability; additional plates carry standard fees.

Public employment preference

Employment
Threshold: Veterans (5 pts); disabled / 30%+ / Purple Heart (10 pts)

Missouri adds 5 points to a veteran's state exam score and 10 points for veterans with a service-connected disability (or 30%+, or Purple Heart), with preference for eligible spouses.

In state tuition

Tuition
Threshold: Missouri-resident veteran

Under 38 USC 3679(c) (originally Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act), every public college that accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill or Montgomery GI Bill students must charge in state tuition to covered students using their GI Bill, regardless of state residency. The old requirement to enroll within 3 years of separation was removed by the Isakson and Roe Act effective August 1, 2021, so there is no longer a time limit after discharge. State specific extensions to this rule are noted below where applicable. Missouri also extends in state tuition to active duty military stationed in Missouri.

Dependent / survivor education

Family education
Threshold: Spouse/child (under 25) of a combat-killed or 80%+ combat-disabled veteran

Missouri's Wartime Veteran's Survivors Grant pays tuition (plus up to $2,000/semester room & board) at public colleges for the spouses and children under 25 of veterans killed or injured in combat, or rated 80%+ from combat, since 9/11/2001.

Hunting and fishing license

Hunting & fishing
Threshold: 60 percent or higher service connected (Missouri resident)

Free hunting and fishing permits for qualifying resident veterans.

State park entrance

State parks
Threshold: Free entry for everyone; $2/night camping discount for veterans, military, seniors, disabled

Missouri state parks charge no entrance fee for anyone. Camping carries a $2-per-night year-round discount for current and former military personnel, people with disabilities, seniors 65+, and family members of active-duty military - ask at payment and show military ID, a disability pass, or a VA/SSA/doctor letter.

Camping & recreation

Recreation
Threshold: Veterans ($2/night camping); 60%+ or former POW (no permit needed)

Missouri gives veterans a $2-per-night camping discount at all state parks year-round, and resident veterans rated 60%+ (or former POWs) can fish and take small game without a permit.

State veterans cemetery

Burial
Threshold: Eligible veterans, spouses, dependents (no residency requirement)

Missouri operates five state veterans cemeteries (Springfield, Higginsville, Bloomfield, Fort Leonard Wood, and Jacksonville) with no-cost burial for eligible veterans and their families.
