Property tax exemption

Property tax
Threshold: 100 percent permanent and total service connected, or rated total due to individual unemployability

Exempts the homestead from all ad valorem property taxes up to a value that adjusts annually (federal Service Connected Disability formula, around $109,986 in 2026). Transfers to the unremarried surviving spouse and minor children.

State income tax

Income tax
Threshold: Age-based tiers today; all ages up to $65,000 starting with the 2027 tax year (HB 266)

Georgia does not tax VA disability compensation. Military retirement income is currently exempt on an age-based scale: under 62 up to $17,500 (plus another $17,500 with at least that much earned income), 62 to 64 up to $35,000, and 65 and older up to $65,000. House Bill 266 (signed May 13, 2025) replaces the age tiers with an exemption of up to $65,000 of military retirement income at any age; per the enrolled bill text it takes effect July 1, 2026 and applies to taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2027.

Disabled veteran plates & registration

Vehicle
Threshold: 100% totally disabled (permanent or temporary), or paid at the 100% rate for unemployability

Georgia issues a free Disabled Veteran license plate - no registration, manufacturing, or annual fee - to veterans certified 100% totally disabled (permanently or temporarily) or compensated at the 100% level due to individual unemployability. The plate allows disabled-parking privileges, and qualifying veterans are also exempt from ad valorem/title tax (TAVT) on one vehicle.

Public employment preference

Employment
Threshold: Veterans (5 pts); service-connected disability (additional 10 pts)

Georgia adds 5 points to a veteran's passing score on state pre-employment exams, with an additional 10 points for veterans who have a service-connected disability.

In state tuition

Tuition
Threshold: Georgia-resident veteran

Under 38 USC 3679(c) (originally Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act), every public college that accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill or Montgomery GI Bill students must charge in state tuition to covered students using their GI Bill, regardless of state residency. The old requirement to enroll within 3 years of separation was removed by the Isakson and Roe Act effective August 1, 2021, so there is no longer a time limit after discharge. State specific extensions to this rule are noted below where applicable.

Dependent / member education (HERO)

Family education
Threshold: Georgia National Guard / Reserve members who served in combat, and their children

Georgia's HERO Scholarship provides college aid to Georgia National Guard and U.S. Reserve members who served in a combat zone, and to their children. Public colleges also offer veteran and dependent tuition support; confirm current programs with the Georgia Department of Veterans Service.
