Florida
Florida exempts 100 percent permanent and total disabled veterans from all ad valorem property taxes on the homestead, gives a partial exemption (up to $5,000) for any service connected disability of 10 percent or higher, free hunting and fishing licenses for resident veterans with 100 percent or unemployability rating, in state tuition for resident veterans, and free state park admission for veterans rated 100 percent.
Florida Department of Veterans AffairsProperty tax exemption
Full ad valorem property tax exemption on the homestead for veterans rated 100 percent permanent and total. Veterans rated 10 percent or higher receive a $5,000 reduction in assessed value. Surviving spouse of a veteran who died from service connected causes also qualifies for the full exemption.
| Rating tier | Exemption |
|---|---|
| 10 percent and up | $5,000 from assessed value |
| 100 percent permanent and total | Full homestead exemption |
State income tax
Florida has no state personal income tax, so your VA disability compensation and your military retirement pay are not taxed by the state.
Disabled veteran plates & registration
Florida issues a Disabled Veteran license plate at no charge to veterans rated 100% total and permanent service-connected, and provides a no-fee driver license or ID card (with a 'Veteran' designation) and free disabled-parking permits.
Public employment preference (Veterans' Preference Act)
Under Florida's Veterans' Preference Act (F.S. 295), disabled veterans, wartime veterans, and certain spouses and survivors receive preference over equally qualified non-veterans in hiring, promotion, and retention for state and local government jobs.
In state tuition
Under 38 USC 3679(c) (originally Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act), every public college that accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill or Montgomery GI Bill students must charge in state tuition to covered students using their GI Bill, regardless of state residency. The old requirement to enroll within 3 years of separation was removed by the Isakson and Roe Act effective August 1, 2021, so there is no longer a time limit after discharge. State specific extensions to this rule are noted below where applicable. Florida classifies honorably discharged veterans as Florida residents for tuition purposes immediately upon enrolling, regardless of prior domicile, in the State University System and Florida College System.
Dependent / survivor education
Florida's Scholarship for Children and Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans (CSDDV) helps dependents of veterans certified at 100% permanent and total, or who died from a service-connected cause. The Bill Young waiver also waives out-of-state tuition for honorably discharged veterans (and qualifying dependents) in Florida.
Hunting and fishing license
Free Military Gold Sportsman's License covering hunting and freshwater and saltwater fishing for qualifying resident veterans.
State park entrance
Florida's Military Entrance Pass is a free lifetime pass for honorably discharged veterans with a service-connected disability. It carries the same benefits as the Family Annual Entrance Pass - day-use entry for up to eight people per vehicle at most parks - and must be obtained in person at a staffed ranger station.
Camping & recreation
Florida's Military Entrance Pass gives free lifetime day-use entry to all Florida State Parks for veterans with a service-connected disability (and Gold Star families), admitting the holder plus up to eight people. Honorably discharged veterans also get 25% off the annual pass.
Veterans cemetery & burial
Eligible Florida veterans may be buried in the VA national cemeteries in Florida (including Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Sarasota, Cape Canaveral, Jacksonville, South Florida, and Tallahassee) at no cost to the family for the gravesite, opening and closing, perpetual care, a government headstone or marker, and a burial flag. Spouses and eligible dependents may also qualify. The FDVA can help confirm eligibility.
Florida ranks 39 of 51 for rural veterans' access to accredited help: 9.68 accredited representatives per 10,000 veterans, with 13.5 percent of its veterans living rural.
