Indiana

Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs

Property tax exemption

Property tax
Threshold: Tiered, service connected disability

Deduction of $14,000 from assessed value for veterans totally disabled or rated 10 percent or higher service connected and at least 62 years old; additional $24,960 deduction for veterans with a service connected total disability.

State income tax

Income tax
Threshold: All residents

Indiana does not tax VA disability compensation, and military retirement pay is fully exempt from Indiana income tax (full exemption since the 2022 tax year).

Disabled veteran plates & registration

Vehicle
Threshold: Mobility-related service-connected disability (DHV plate); excise tax credit separate

Indiana's Disabled Hoosier Veteran plate is for veterans whose service-connected disability affects mobility: loss of sight in both eyes, loss or permanent loss of use of feet or hands, a VA-rated condition that precludes walking without pain or difficulty, or a VA rating of at least 50 percent with at least 60 percent of it attributable to a mobility disability (certificate from the VA or service branch required). The plate carries disabled-parking privileges but does not by itself waive standard registration fees; eligible disabled veterans may separately claim a vehicle excise tax credit through the BMV.

Public employment preference

Employment
Threshold: Honorably discharged (181+ days active duty)

Indiana adds a preference worth 10% of the exam points for honorably discharged veterans (181+ days of active duty) applying for full-time state government jobs.

In state tuition

Tuition
Threshold: Indiana-resident veteran

Under 38 USC 3679(c) (originally Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act), every public college that accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill or Montgomery GI Bill students must charge in state tuition to covered students using their GI Bill, regardless of state residency. The old requirement to enroll within 3 years of separation was removed by the Isakson and Roe Act effective August 1, 2021, so there is no longer a time limit after discharge. State specific extensions to this rule are noted below where applicable.

Dependent / survivor education

Family education
Threshold: Child (18-26) of a disabled or Purple Heart Indiana veteran

Indiana's CVO program remits up to 100% of tuition and regular fees (up to 124 credit hours) at public colleges for the children of disabled veterans or Purple Heart recipients who entered service from Indiana.

Hunting and fishing license

Hunting & fishing
Threshold: Service connected disability (Indiana resident)

Reduced fee resident hunting and fishing licenses.

State park entrance

State parks
Threshold: DHV-plate-eligible veterans ($25 annual pass); former POWs (free Golden Hoosier Passport)

Indiana veterans do not receive free state park admission. Veterans eligible for the Disabled Hoosier Veteran license plate can buy the annual Disabled Hoosier Veteran Pass for $25 (unlimited admission to state parks, recreation areas, reservoirs, and forests; not historic sites or museums). The $25 Golden Hoosier Passport serves residents 65+ or on Social Security disability, and former POWs receive it free.

Camping & recreation

Recreation
Threshold: Disabled veterans and former POWs (50% off annual passport)

Disabled veterans and former POWs can buy the Hoosier Golden Passport - unlimited annual admission to Indiana state parks, forests, and reservoirs - at half price.

State veterans cemetery

Burial
Threshold: Veterans eligible for national burial, and spouses

The Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery (Madison) provides no-cost burial for veterans eligible for a national cemetery and their spouses.
