Veterans facing eviction or a terminal diagnosis often assume their claim has to wait its turn like every other. It does not. VA moves claims to the front for financial hardship, homelessness, terminal illness, age 85 and older, ALS, former prisoners of war, and Medal of Honor and Purple Heart recipients, but only when the request and the proof are actually in the record. Asking changes the speed, never the evidence bar.

When a claim can move to the front of the line

VA handles claims in order, but it moves certain claims ahead when waiting would cause real harm. If your situation fits one of these categories, you can ask VA to flag your claim for priority or expedited processing. Asking does not change the decision itself, only the speed.

Common categories for priority handling

  • Terminal illness or a seriously life-limiting condition.
  • Financial hardship, such as an eviction or foreclosure notice, shut-off utilities, or an inability to afford basic needs.
  • Homelessness or being at risk of homelessness.
  • Age 85 or older.
  • Medal of Honor or Purple Heart recipients.
  • Former prisoners of war.
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
  • Very seriously injured or seriously injured service members, often handled through the pre-discharge and IDES tracks.
  • Active duty members in certain pre-discharge programs.

How to ask

There is no single button to push. The reliable path is to submit a clear written statement explaining which category applies and attach proof, for example a hardship letter, an eviction notice, a medical statement about a terminal condition, or documentation of homelessness. You can do this through VA.gov, with help from a VA accredited representative, or by contacting VA directly. Put the request in the record so VA acts on it.

The Fully Developed Claim program

Separate from hardship categories, the Fully Developed Claim program is a faster path for any veteran who submits all the evidence up front and certifies there is nothing more to add. It is not a hardship flag. It is a way to shorten the evidence-gathering phase for everyone who uses it.

What to keep in mind

Priority processing speeds the queue. It does not lower the evidence bar. You still need a current diagnosis, the in-service link, and, for most claims, a medical opinion. Gather that evidence first so a faster decision is also a correct one. You can watch overall VA claim volume on our live backlog tracker.

This is educational. It is not legal advice. A VA accredited representative can help you document a hardship and request expedited handling.

Common questions

Who qualifies for priority VA claim processing?

The recognized categories include terminal illness, financial hardship (eviction or foreclosure notice, shut-off utilities), homelessness or risk of homelessness, age 85 or older, Medal of Honor or Purple Heart recipients, former prisoners of war, ALS, and very seriously injured service members in the pre-discharge and IDES tracks.

How do I request expedited handling?

There is no single button. Submit a clear written statement naming the category and attach proof: a hardship letter, an eviction notice, a medical statement about a terminal condition, or documentation of homelessness. File it through VA.gov, with an accredited representative, or directly with VA, so the request is in the record and VA can act on it.

Does priority processing improve my odds of approval?

No. It speeds the queue; it does not lower the evidence bar. You still need the current diagnosis, the in-service link, and usually a medical opinion, so gather that evidence first so a faster decision is also a correct one.

What is the Fully Developed Claim fast lane?

A separate program open to any veteran, not a hardship flag: you submit all your evidence up front and certify there is nothing more to add, which shortens VA's evidence gathering phase. It pairs well with an Intent to File, which locks your effective date while you assemble the packet.
