Where to verify a VA accredited representative
The representative search inside eBenefits disappeared when eBenefits was retired in March 2022. Today there are two official places to look: the consumer facing Find a Representative tool on VA.gov, and the VA Office of General Counsel accreditation search, which remains the authoritative database of every currently accredited attorney, claims agent, and VSO representative.
What changed
For years, veterans were told to find or verify a representative through the search tool inside eBenefits. That tool went away with the rest of the portal by March 31, 2022, and old links to it now fail.
VA now maintains two official tools that serve different purposes. The Find a VA Accredited Representative or VSO tool on VA.gov is the consumer facing search built for choosing a representative. The VA Office of General Counsel accreditation search remains the underlying authoritative database: it lists only currently accredited individuals and currently recognized organizations, and VA states its data refreshes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evening. VA also moved the appointment process online, so VA Form 21-22 and 21-22a can be completed through VA.gov rather than only on paper.
When it happened
- 2022-03-31The eBenefits representative search is retired along with the rest of the eBenefits portal.
- 2022-04-01VA.gov becomes the online home for finding and appointing accredited representatives. The OGC accreditation database continues as the authoritative verification source.
Why it changed
Consolidating the search into VA.gov followed the same portal consolidation that retired eBenefits. Keeping the OGC accreditation database as the system of record matters because accreditation is a legal status under 38 CFR 14.629: only accredited attorneys, claims agents, and VSO representatives may lawfully assist with VA claims, and verification has to run against the live legal record, not a directory that might lag.
What replaced it
Who is affected
- Veterans choosing or verifying a representative before signing VA Form 21-22 or 21-22a.
- Resource pages that still link to the eBenefits representative search or to cached lists of representatives.
- Anyone evaluating claims help offers, since checking current accreditation is the single best defense against unaccredited claims consultants.
Practical implications
- Always verify accreditation against the OGC search before signing an appointment form. A name appearing in any directory, including ours, is not a substitute for the live legal record.
- The OGC data refreshes three times a week, so a recently suspended or newly accredited representative shows up within days.
- Old eBenefits representative search links should be replaced with the VA.gov Find a Representative tool for choosing, and the OGC search for verifying.
